Herren zu Schützen guild house

The historic Herren zu Schützen guild house is located in the heart of Lucerne's old town quarter. Erected in 1709, it was the summer house of Franz Ludwig Pfyffer von Wyher, a lieutenant general in the service of the French crown, a topographer and the creator of the large-scale landscape relief of Central Switzerland (now in the Glacier Garden).

The edifice passed into the possession of the Herren zu Schützen guild in 1807, who in the same year sold their guild house in Fischmarkt – today's Hotel des Balances.

The origins of the Herren zu Schützen guild date back to the 14th century. It started as an assembly of residents capable of bearing arms. Until well into the 18th century the great and the good of Lucerne were all members of the guild, where they fostered conviviality, entertainment and shooting. To this day, the mission of the Herren zu Schützen guild remains to preserve and promote social relationships amongst its members.
